Karni Classics proudly presents Trio Karni’s new album, A Conversation Across Time - a musical journey that places the refined contrapuntal world of the Bach family alongside the lyrical late-Romantic voice of Robert Fuchs. Though separated by nearly a century and a half, these works reveal a shared artistic ideal: chamber music as intimate dialogue, where individual voices converse with elegance, imagination, and emotional depth. At the heart of the recording lies the unique sonority of the violin–viola–piano trio, an ensemble capable of both transparency and warmth. Through this carefully curated program, Trio Karni explores connections across generations, styles, and musical languages - from the intellectual brilliance of the Baroque to the poetic introspection of fin-de-siècle Vienna. JS & CPE Bach Trio Sonata in G Major (reconstructed after BWV 1038) This reconstructed Trio Sonata offers a fascinating glimpse into the artistic relationship between Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Rooted in the rich tradition of German Baroque chamber music, the work combines structural clarity with expressive freedom, revealing the transition from the mature Baroque style toward the emotional sensitivity of the early Classical era. Rather than presenting a soloist accompanied by supporting instruments, the trio texture creates a true musical conversation. Themes pass fluidly between violin, viola, and keyboard, unfolding through imitation, ornamentation, and intricate contrapuntal interplay. The opening movement displays balance and elegance characteristic of Johann Sebastian Bach, while moments of harmonic boldness and rhetorical nuance already suggest the emerging voice of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and his celebrated empfindsamer Stil. The central slow movement unfolds with lyrical intimacy and vocal expressiveness, while the concluding movement restores vitality through rhythmic brilliance and dance-like energy. Standing between generations, the work embodies both continuity and transformation - a dialogue not only between instruments, but between musical eras. Robert Fuchs 7 Fantasiestücke, Op. 57 for Violin, Viola and Piano Today known primarily to musicians and connoisseurs, Robert Fuchs was one of the most admired pedagogues and composers of late-Romantic Vienna. A professor at the Vienna Conservatory, his students included Gustav Mahler, Jean Sibelius, Hugo Wolf, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Franz Schreker, and Alexander Zemlinsky. Johannes Brahms himself greatly admired Fuchs’ craftsmanship, lyricism, and natural melodic gift. The 7 Fantasiestücke, Op. 57 reveal these qualities in their most intimate form. Composed for violin, viola, and piano, the cycle belongs to the great Viennese chamber music tradition in which poetry, atmosphere, and refined expression take precedence over virtuoso display. Each miniature unfolds as a distinct emotional landscape — at times wistful and nostalgic, at others playful, passionate, or gently melancholic. Fuchs writes with extraordinary sensitivity for the viola, whose warm middle register becomes a central expressive voice throughout the cycle. The violin and viola frequently intertwine in close dialogue above luminous and delicately balanced piano textures, creating music of remarkable sincerity and chamber intimacy. Rather than striving for monumental drama, Fuchs embraces concentration, nuance, and emotional subtlety. The result is a deeply human work: elegant, lyrical, and profoundly Viennese in spirit. A Musical Dialogue Placed side by side, the Bach and Fuchs works illuminate more than historical contrast. Both composers understood chamber music as a living exchange between voices - a space for conversation, reflection, and shared expression. In A Conversation Across Time, Trio Karni invites the listener into this dialogue across centuries, where the clarity of the Baroque and the warmth of Romanticism meet in a common language of intimacy, imagination, and musical storytelling.
